Brexit
British Independence Day came and went on 23rd June, the day on which, a year ago we as a country voted to leave the EU. I am a remain voter but have accepted the % that voted leave won so let it be.
Today, we do not have a strong government to move brexit forward. I fear investment will drift quicker than the Thames out of the UK, Ireland will have an internal border and the NHS will end when all the immigrant workers flock home.
The recent Queens speech had 8 brexit bills in it, designed to attempt to recapture fading power, to restore control over farming and fishing, to make trade deals with the rest of the world and end free movement and rule by unelected European judges.
I am unsure personally if Maybe can see this through to be honest, I feel she has totally lost control now and Hammond is demanding a Soft Brexit. I see the Pro-EU Tories lining up planning to join labour and the liberals are still fighting for continued membership of a single market.
You can already see that some major European companies ideally want a soft brexit because the UK has been the strongest export market for some of these global giants since around late 2007. Major players in the car market especially in Europe, such as Germany could really end up suffering.
I think May and the UK need to sit down with a cup of tea and a chocolate Hob Nob and put together a fully costed step by step plan of the steps that need to be taken if negotiations actually break down. I think May needs to negotiate for a departure from the single market and customs union but seek a longer transactional period inside the single market of around 7yrs.
By March 2019, we should be out of the EU but what the hell will this look like? I actually dread to imagine. I think we will be out but still bound and tied by EU rules of which at the point we will have absolutely no say about. I think we will also have even less sovereignty than before.
I can actually see currently at this point two realistic options
(1) Hard Brexit
(2) Return to the EU Fold
Number 2, would bring as we know National Humiliation but as we are an incredibly pragmatic nation we would survive it. Think back to 1956, we climbed down after the Suez Fiasco as we could definitely deal with a brexit mess.
