Belief

Beliefs guide our choices, which ultimately create our results.

I have always split my beliefs into two groups - the first group is a prison, my beliefs keep me trapped in negative thinking and then negative behaviour.  The second group is empowerment, my beliefs can be empowering and lead to courageous action and new possibilities for me.

Beliefs are simple to explain, let's say you believe people are bad, so that leads you to living a guarded life closed off to everything life can offer leaving you lonely and bitter.  On the other hand if you believe people are good, you will continually, no matter what,  always see the best in them, developing friendships and relationships that make you feel connected.

Likewise, if you believe good things never happen to you, you will never make an effort.  But, if you believe the past doesn’t have to dictate your future, you will continually try different things and create possibilities for yourself.

Same world, different beliefs, different choices leading to totally different results.

Beliefs come from our own experience and reflections or they come as an acceptance of what others tell us like our parents or teachers at school. Belief from experience or reflection is self generated.

Beliefs from experience are gained by trying things for ourselves.  This starts at home as a small child and develops through primary school and continues throughout life.  Experience comes mainly from something that happens to us - belief in the tooth fairy is an example of this because money appears under your pillow as a small child.

Experience can be questioned in a scientific way because truth comes from experiments designed to prove or disprove what it true.

Reflection is the opposite to experience because it is purely internal. Reflection for example is done after something happens.  I do a lot of reflecting before I go to sleep about all the crazy stuff my mouth has said that needed to stay in my head.

I spent a lot of years involved in the Church which I have briefly touched on in other posts. Raised Catholic and attended Catholic schools and spent many years at Church Youth Club.

A Canon is a set of truths that are unchallenged and are set out, for example, in religious texts.  Many people believe the Bible and their whole life is shaped on this belief and all discussion starts from this foundation as it is a believed given area that is accepted by many without challenge.  To challenge a canon, is like setting yourself up to fail, especially against a religion based on the Bible.

Beliefs can take on so many forms.  In 1938, on US radio Orson Welles read 'War of the Worlds' by H.G.Wells, many listeners who were tuned in believed that the world was really being attacked by aliens and it caused mass panic.

A belief that made me laugh was to do with the former first lady Hilary Clinton.  Clinton actually believed that she channeled the spirit of the late former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt in 1996 several times.  Hilary Clinton was utterly convinced that Eleanor Roosevelt spoke through her, delivering advice.

Life is and can be beautiful, I am not naïve enough to try and write that it's beautiful everyday because it isn't, it's often shit, it's hard, unfair and can at times be incredibly cruel on all manner of levels.

Nobody knows what life holds for them, we don't have a guidebook handed to us.  I know that I am certain that life will offer me many paths.

When I sit here thinking back even over the last 10 years, much has happened to me that at some points I thought was impossible. I am married to a woman which was never on the cards when I was in my 20s due to the laws etc.  The boundaries of possibility are forever being moved.

My life is always changing, it's an adventure powered by my belief's.  What makes my belief so empowering is the very simple sense of connection that comes from knowing my life is connected to my wife's and the people I have met at work and actually to every other life, it is tied and woven by forces greater than I know or even understand.

This sense of connection alone gives my life meaning.

My life is better because I choose to believe.
