Womens Golf - The Future?
The Solheim Cup has just finished and will remain in the USA, after a 5 point win over Europe.
The opening tee shot of Mel Reid blew me away, then in my humble opinion, the standard of golf, over the second two days was of a very high quality. The opening day's foursomes was scrappy and teams exchanged birdies and pars taking a hole with either.
Twitter was rife with Team USA whitewash but I don't really agree and I am not being biased, Europe took the opening foursomes and they shared the Friday morning foursomes, Sundays singles was drawn at 6 a piece. Europe need to brush up on their four all, they won only one and lost the other 7 matches. So not really the whitewash Twitter was claiming. Europe have a young team now with, I think if I am correct 3 rookies included.
I watched hole outs from everywhere and absolutely awe inspiring golf, golf that made me proud actually, I watched comebacks on the final day from Lexi for the USA and Matthew for Europe. Matthew, now 47yrs old is part of yesteryear, old school from Solheims I watched in the past but nobody can doubt her talent after stepping in for Petterson, she won 3/4 matches, 2 wins with Icher and then experience saw her take down Lewis in the singles.
Kerr was woman of the match for the USA, taking 3.5 points from 4. I can see another major in her for sure. Again she is old school but showing team USA youngsters how you go about a Solheim.
In my opinion this Solheim was a showcase for some of the finest golf available.
Slow play is a massive issue on the Men's and Ladies Tours. This week nobody bought out a stopwatch or was put on the clock, I never heard any rulings made of slow play and some of those four ball matches were reported to be towards the 5hrs 45min mark - that is painfully slow, golf isn't a race but that is slow. I remember remarks on Twitter from well respected PGA Professionals about the putting routines.
I remember clearly watching - long glance from both sides, line up of putt from behind the hole, line up of putt from marker, then long chat with caddie then the whole routine again - bloody painful. Nobody needs this, nobody needs to be watching this to be honest.
The Ladies tour has several doubts hanging over it's head and will hopefully be takenover by the men's tour and saved. I am looking forward to Scotland for the next Solheim.
