Solheim Cup 2017
The 15th Solheim Cup, were has the time gone, I remember my favourite players of yesteryear competing with us going against formidable US captains such as Rankin, Lopez, Bradley and Sheehan.
Today, like everything, we have our new crop of European players, Hull would make Poulter proud I feel.
Sorenstam, is one of all my all time golfing heroines along with Laura Davies. I have been lucky enough to meet Dame Laura in her own home (I will do a flashback blog to this at some point).
Sorenstam as Captain got massive thumbs up from me. From the crop of new players, the beautiful Mel Reid and Pettersen are my favs, no comments please!!
On Saturday evening, the USA needed 5.5 points and everyone believed the outcome was inevitable even before a Sunday shot was struck.
Unfortunately for Europe, the USA did not stumble, Sorenstam and the European team are worthy of massive credit for a singles showing that saw them draw six points a side. The Europeans it seems would not go down without a fight. Unfortunately, the better team retained the cup.
Sorenstam watched her team fight, fight for every point in every single match.
Juli Inkster has now become the second woman to lead the USA to multiple Solheim Cup wins. This time Lopez came as Vice Captain.
Europe, trailed with a final score that was respectable at 11.5 to 16.5.
I remember a while back caddying for Ladies European Tour player Marie-Laure de Lorenzi at Chart Hills, in our four, I was lucky enough to watch a young Nordqvist fresh faced, completely different to the Nordqvist of today.
On Sunday, I watched Nordqvist go 4 up against World Number 2 Lexi Thompson at the turn before Lexi woke up and then went on to play a seven-hole stretch in eight under par to move to 1 up. Nordqvist played her approach shot into the 18th, with a concession ensuring the half. This is one of the best singles matches I have witnessed in a while.
Yin’s shared a point with Caroline Masson which formally ensured retention of the cup for the USA. Salas took the US past the 14-point marker with a single hole victory. Kerr, who I believe is the star of the US team and took down my favourite Mel Reid 2&1. Kang closed out the bottom match, 3&1 against Pedersen.
Hall, unfortunately lost her match to Creamer. It was ugly seeing Hall miss from 5ft on the 18th green to hand Creamer a 1-up win. Hall appeared on all the matches and I think we will see her on American soil permanently soon.
Hull’s took Lang 1up even with her continuing wrist problems, playing through pain in the singles match.
I cannot wait to see Matthew as captain when Europe host the US at Gleneagles in 2019.
